Orbit is a major UK housing organisation that owns and manages 37,000 homes and serves around 100,000 customers across Midlands, East, South East and parts of London. The group is committed to building communities and making profit for a purpose. Orbit provides homes for all sorts of people, including support and care for some of the most vulnerable people in the community, so handling confidential data is vital to the business.

Making data protection fun

We share Orbit’s passion for building homes and communities, so jumped at the chance to support their work to train all of the group’s 2,000-strong workforce in data protection principles and best practice. It’s a serious topic, but one that needed to be got across in an enjoyable and memorable way.

We designed and produced the ‘You’re Secure’ board game, based on careful research into legal requirements and guidelines from the Information Commissioner.

The game uses cartoon-style characters to represent each of the core data protection principles, and takes players through realistic scenarios to help employees make the right decisions and take advice when needed. Test cards checked people’s understanding and memory of key points.

After initial testing, the game was refined and launched to great success. Orbit was so pleased with the results that they later commissioned an electronic Wii bowling version of the game for further nationwide training and consultancy for other housing providers and local authorities.
